You can Airplay from your mobile iPhone device using Airplay 1 to your Apple TV. Apple keeps working with device manufacturers to increase what devices support AirPlay 2. Check their site for the latest list of TVs and AV receivers.
Apple Mobile devices with iOS 14 or later, need to give local network access for the MotorTrend app so it can connect to the TV. Go to your device’s settings, scroll down to the MotorTrend app, and under “Allow MotorTrend to Access” make sure that the slider for Local Network access is enabled.
If you are still having an issue with AirPlay or screen mirroring from your Apple device, here are some things you can do:
- For Live events, if you are having problems getting the live stream to load,
- Make sure your devices are close by and turned on. Apple TV devices may need to be woken up from sleep mode with your Apple TV remote, especially if it uses ethernet.
- Restart your device
- iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
- Apple TV
- HomePod*
- Mac
- Smart TVs will depend on the manufacturer’s directions, but can also be done by unplugging the power cord for the TV and then plugging it back in after 30 seconds.
- Check for updates. Make sure that your MotorTrend app is up to date, and if there are any updates for your Apple device.
- Make sure that your devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Most newer WiFi routers can have multiple networks at the same time. Commonly they will indicate if they are 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz. If you have multiple networks it is possible for your mobile device to be on the same router but a different network and the traffic between those frequencies and wired ethernet may be filtered. Compare the network on your mobile device to the AirPlay target.
- iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Go to Settings > Wi-Fi. Also, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.
- Apple TV: Go to Settings > Network. If your Apple TV uses Ethernet, check that the cable is plugged into the router that you use for Wi-Fi.
- Mac: Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar.
- HomePod:* HomePod uses the same Wi-Fi network as the iOS device it was set up with. If your iOS device is in the range of the HomePod and connected to a different Wi-Fi network, HomePod will show an alert in the Home app that says "Wi-Fi Network.” To connect HomePod to the same Wi-Fi network as your iOS device, open the Home app, press and hold HomePod, tap Settings, then tap "Move HomePod to [Wi-Fi network]" at the top of the screen.
- Third-party AirPlay-compatible speakers and Smart TVs: Go to the manufacturer’s website to learn how to connect them to your Wi-Fi network.
- If you can’t AirPlay to an Apple TV or HomePod,* check the AirPlay settings for that device.
- On Apple TV, you might have restricted who can AirPlay.
- On HomePod,* you might have restricted speaker access.
- For AirPlay 2, you might need to invite others to control your home so they can AirPlay to your devices.
- Try power cycling the WiFi router and TV. Turn off the mobile device. Then unplug the power to your WiFi router (this may also be your internet modem or gateway) and the AirPlay device.
- Make sure there is only one device trying to stream at any time.
- Some third-party apps interfere with AirPlay. In particular, apps that offer similar functions as AirPlay. In extreme cases, to resolve the AirPlay conflict you may need to uninstall apps that send your screen or media files to other devices.
- Turn off restrictions from Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
If it still isn’t working for you, then we need to collect some information to investigate this further. We will need to know your device’s model, OS version, app version, what are you trying to cast to, and your public-facing IP address. One option to get your public IP is to go to https://www.whatsmyip.org/. You can share that with us through the Submit a request link or email us at help@motortrend.com.
